TitleWoolfson, Michael Mark: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1982
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationOne of the leading X-ray crystallographers. He has made great progress towards a general solution of the problem of determining crystal structures, and more than anyone else in recent years, has been responsible for the use of direct methods which enable structures to be deuced directly from the diffraction data; his devices, such as the computer package MULTAN, are responsible for about half of the structures now determined in all parts of the world. Problems that were impossible twenty years ago can now be solved, using modern computers, in 10-15 minutes. He is very versatile; his work on the origin of the solar system has renewed interest in the capture theory, which had been thought to be obsolete, and he has contributed numerous stimulating ideas to the general study of the origin and dynamical evolution of the solar system. He is Chairman of the Royal Society's Subcommittee on Planetary Sciences. A list of 2 books and 76 papers on X-ray crystallography, astronomy and colour vision is appended.
