| Citation | Internationally recognised for his distinguished contributions (together with K R Porter) to major innovations which permitted the application of electronmicroscopy to biological material. After these key technical innovations, George Palade made pioneering discoveries defining for the first time the structure of the cell and its components at the elctronmicroscope level of resolution. He followed this work by a sustained series of further outstanding studies (done with P Siekevitz) in which cell fine structure was linked to biochemical and physiological function. In this way the central role of ribosomes in protein synthesis was uncovered, the function of the membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum in cell compartmentalization was explained, and the process of cellular secretion and transport was illuminated. More recently, the biogenesis, differentiation, and turnover of cellular membranes have been investigated by Palade and new studies undertaken on capillary permeability, the passage of fluids in and out of the cells, and the problem of the blood-cell barrier. Palade's work has been recognised by the award of numerous honorary degrees, academic distinctions, and prizes, including, in 1974, the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine (shared with A Claude and C de Duve). |
