TitleBox, George Edward Pelham: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1979
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationThe Candidate is distinguished for his work in statistical methods and theory. His introduction, when at I.C.I. Ltd, of experimental designs for determining optimal conditions and of the notion of "response surface" designs for experiments with several continuously varying factors has been widely influential. One of his developments was the idea of Evolutionary Operation for plant operation. Much of the Candidate's more recent work has been in time series analysis, where his development of systematic techniques for fitting, testing and applying a special family of models (so-called Box-Jenkins models) has been fruitful in many fields. His other contributions include theoretical studies of robustness, of transformations in analysis of variance and multiple regression, of multivariate distribution theory and of Bayesian notions in statistics. His work is characterized by a mixture of conceptual novelty and a concern with applications.
