TitleGreenwood, Peter Humphry: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1984
DescriptionCitation handwritten
CitationDistinguished for his well planned series of studies on the systematics and evolution of teleost fishes. Though concerned largely with living forms, Greenwood has extended his research to cover relevant fossil groups. His outstanding contributions, which are based on thorough field and laboratory work over a period of almost 30 years, have appreciably advanced our understanding of the evolutionary relationships of African lake fishes, particularly the haplochromine cichlids of Lake Victoria. He has recently turned his attention to the interrelationships of the species flocks of this and other African lakes. This research, the results of which appear in a long series of both descriptive and synthesisive papers, has not only contributed greatly to detailed appreciation of the complex taxonomic relationships and extraordinary adaptability of cichlid fishes, but has become an essential part of evolutionary biology. Greenwood has also played a leading part in a timely revival of phyletic studies on teleost fishes. His collaboration in a critical reappraisal of the classification and phyletic relationships of teleosts has led him to close investigation of the "lower" groups. Besides its welcome by international authorities, this work has stimulated long needed research, particularly by younger ichthyologists. Greenwood is now involved in functional studies that are doing much to strengthen our understanding of teleost phylogeny.
