TitleMurray, James Dickson: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1982
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDr. Murray has made fundamental contributions in the application of mathematics to many different fields. In applied mathematics he is noted for resolving problems in the theory of singular perturbations for travelling shocks and Burgers' equations for turbulence. The Murray two-phase fluid theory for bubble dynamics forms the backbone for the treatment of beds which are gas-fluidised in chemical engineering. His research on the Wyman-Wittenburg molecular model helped elucidate the role of myoglobin in red muscle and, in particular, explained the apparent anomaly that carbon monoxide diffusion is not facilitated. His recent model of mammalian surface pattern formation fits many of the experimental facts including developmental bifurcations and an example of developmental constraint. All his work is characterised by fine mathematical technique coupled with a deep understanding of the application, resulting in practical mathematical models with which really significant progress can be achieved.
