TitleRaff, Martin Charles: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1980
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on cell biology of lymphocytes, mast cells, and neural cells. He introduced surface markers to subdivide lymphocytes, notably Thy.1 and surface immunoglobulin. Modern work on lymphocyte antigens began with his discovery of the pre-B cell and B cell maturation in vitro. His contributions to cell surface membrane physiology include the discovery of ligand-induced redistribution of surface components ("capping" or "patching" are terms he introduced), and membrane protein displacement during the exocytosis of histamine granules from mast cells. Most recently he has identified the major classes of glial cells in culture, and is providing new information about their growth and interactions in vitro.
