TitleFellgett, Peter Berners: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1979
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationR.W. Wood Prizeman 1978 of the Optical Society of America. Distinguished for his application of basic concepts of fluctuations and of systems-analysis to spectrometry, astronomy, and acoustics. He was first to discover the "Fellgett-advantage" now world-renowned: that there is an n-fold gain in information-rate when in spectrometry n data-points are multiplexed. Values of n up to 10^6 are now in practical use. Fellgett has made substantial contributions to the understanding of performance-limits of detectors, including photographic emulsions, and thermal, photo-conductive, and photo-emissive detectors. He has successfully applied such principles to visual observations, and they have stimulated much current physiological interest through their relevance to processes involved in vision. His radial-velocity photometer has increased speed of observations about 1,000-fold, and he initiated many of the fundamental ideas for the design of the modern star-measuring machine GALAXY which has enormously increased measuring-rates. Recently Fellgett has with others developed a system of sound-reproduction known by the term ambisonics in which, as opposed to the naïve concept of quadriphonics, his logical analysis leads to an optimum result at a minimum cost, and the B.B.C. have now adopted his system. In all his work in numerous fields, Fellgett has introduced highly original ideas of a basic pioneering kind that have led to far-reaching advances and practical developments.
