CitationDistinguished for contributions to modern electrochemistry and surface science. The most striking of these is his discovery of the surface enhanced Raman effect in 1974. This showed for the first time the possibility of obtaining in-situ molecular information about species at a metal/electrolyte interface. This observation has led to an intensive international research effort in the last few years. He has recently followed this with a demonstration that X-ray methods can be used to obtain in-situ structural information at these interfaces.
In earlier years he laid the foundations of the theory of electrodeposition (with Thirsk) and made extensive contributions to organic electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering. All his work is characterized by great originality despite its wide range. In 1979 he was awarded the Royal Chemical Society's medal for Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry.
