DescriptionCitation typed
CitationProf. V. Ramalingaswami is distinguished both as a medical scientist and as an administrator whose activities have profoundly influenced medical research in India. His investigations initially delineated the common nutritional disorders of India, thus providing a basis for their recognition as hazards to human health. His subsequent work provided a better understanding of the basic cellular mechanisms underlying these malnutrition syndromes especially those involving protein deficiencies. Using animal models, and particularly non-human primates, Ramalingaswami showed that the fundamental lesion in protein deficiency was a marked prolongation of the cell cycle, both in continuously replicating cell systems and in those in which cell replication is determined by cell loss. This work was experimental pathology of a high order, with direct consequences for the management of disease in man. Ramalingaswami also made important contributions to our understanding of endemic goitre in the Himalayas and in South East Asia generally and to liver disease in the Indian subcontinent.
As a medical administrator, Ramalingaswami has been immensely influential. He was from 1969-1979 a very successful Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and since 1979 has been the Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research. His maintenance of rigorous scientific standards in Indian medical research has helped greatly to enhance its stature. His influence has been recognised by his election in 1979 to the Presidency of the Indian National Science Academy. The many international distinctions received by Ramalingaswami include Foreign Associateship of the National Academy of Sciences of the U.S.A. and Honorary Fellowship of the American College of Physicians.
