TitleKeller, Joseph Bishop: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1982
DescriptionCertificate of Candidate for Election to Foreign Membership. Citation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to many branches of applied mathematics and theoretical physics. He originated the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) in electrical engineering, providing universal formulae for the diffraction of rays by arbitrary bodies which are the basis of most high frequency calculations to-day. The theory has proved so valuable that it has become fundamental in acoustics, aerodynamics, elasticity, seismology, ship waves and resonance phenomena near islands. There are now several textbooks devoted wholly to GTD.
He has made significant contributions to the theory of wave propagation in random media, an important physical problem which usually has to be dealt with approximately. He developed a simple formulation that overcame non-uniformities plaguing earlier theories. He also pioneered research on the evolution of singularities in solutions of non-linear wave equations. In mathematical biology he has elucidated subjects as diverse as the flow of blood, the spread of epidemics and the structure of plant growth..
