TitleNye, Peter Hague: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1981
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his researches into the structure and physical chemistry of soils, especially into movement of ions and uncharged molecules by diffusion and mass flow. His experimental methods have been ingenious and effective. His understanding of the physiology of absorption of substances by roots has enabled him to explain relative effects of transpiration and diffusion, the development of depletion zones around the root surface, the functioning of root-hairs and the significance of root-demand coefficient in uptake of various nutrients. His method of quantitative radiography of soil has not only demonstrated the existence of the depletion zones but also enlightened the study of root competition and demonstrated an internal translocation of phosphate to the root tip. His early work concerned the structure and development of natural tropical soils, and the maintenance of fertility of cultivated ones.
