TitleRaynes, Edward Peter: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1984
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his studies of the relationships between liquid crystal device performance and material properties, Dr. Raynes has played a key role throughout the development of liquid crystal displays. His early research established the electro-optic properties of uniquely stable cyano-biphenyl materials and created novel mixtures, enabling the first production of reliable devices. He devised methods for predicting the composition and properties of commercially valuable multi-component eutectic systems and applied these successfully to produce such mixtures. His patented methods for eliminating the defects he named as "reverse twist" and "reverse tilt" are now industry standards in producing blemish-free devices. These signal contributions were key-factors in the acceptance and consequential success of liquid crystal displays.
His more recent contributions are on dyed phase change systems, on devices with a high multiplexing capability, and on the physical properties of wide temperature range materials.
Dr. Raynes' 40 publications and 33 patents attest to his productivity, and his achievements have been recognised by the Rank Prize for opto-electronics, and one of the largest Government Awards to Inventors.
