TitleHarris, John Edwin: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1982
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDr J E Harris is distinguished for his work on diffusion creep and his contributions to creep fracture and the swelling of uranium have added greatly to knowledge of metals and their oxidations. His work on post-irradiation studies threw new light on the influence of radiation on mechanical properties. This is of great importance in determining the life of fuel elements in reactors including particularly the advanced gas-cooler reactor. His work on a number of other aspects, among them inhibition of diffusion creep and creep fracture, has been generalised in his expressions for diffusional strain due to the growth of creep voids. He has influenced a great deal of modern study of irradiated metals.
