CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the theory of molecular collisions and to the relationship between molecular scattering and spectroscopy. In his thesis he predicted reverse polarization in Raman scattering in complexes such as IrCl62-, and this was observed in the 1970s. In 1968 he proposed a simple one-electron pseudo-potential for the reaction K + NaCl to KCl + Na. His main contributions have been in semi-classical collision theory, particularly in relation to curve-crossing problems in the application of scattering-theory techniques to spectroscopy. These include a completely new non-perturbative analytical approach to predissociation; the theory gave a quantitative description of the predissociation and photodissociation of Ibr, and has the merit of being directly invertable to give potential-energy surfaces. His recent work has been concerned with the local-mode description of molecular vibrations, and with classical reactive scattering theory.
