Title | Moore, Derek William: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1988 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his major theoretical and computational contributions to at least four distinct fields in the mechanics of fluids: (a) the motion of drops and bubbles in liquids; (b) the dynamics of rotating fluids and of bodies moving therein; (c) non-linear oscillations associated with thermal convection and the strange-attractor phenomenon, where his work was among the earliest in the developments of the past quarter-century; (d) vortex dynamics, including the development and breakdown of trailing vortex wakes in the atmosphere. His seminal work on the spontaneous singularity which can develop on a vortex sheet has been enormously influential in stimulating a new field of research. His work is characterized by a powerful combination of mathematical and computational analysis, with a keen appreciation of its experimental and observational implications. |
