TitleZeki, Semir: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1988
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationZeki was the first to subdivide the cytoarchitecture areas 18 and 19 in the monkey into areas V2, V3, V4, MT etc. by cutting the corpus callosum and mapping terminations of its fibres which were known to end in representations of the vertical meridian of the visual field. He established the main outlines of visual representation in these areas by making lesions in known points of V1 and V2 and following the terminal degeneration.
He studied the physiological properties of cells in these areas, and was the first to propose that the pre-striate visual areas are specialised for further analysis of colour movement and depth. His studies have produced a new understanding of the significance of the visual cortical areas which has promoted currently active investigation by many others.
