TitleBoulton, Geoffrey Stewart: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1984
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to our understanding of the mechanisms of glacial erosion and sedimentation, to our understanding of the relationship of these to the physics of glaciers and glacier movement, to our knowledge of glacial sediments and the landforms created by glacier flow, to our criteria for interpreting ancient glacial and related deposits, and to our appreciation of Pleistocene and older glacial sequences and regional landscapes. Boulton's work is highly original and characterized by a shrewd blend of critical field observations with laboratory experiments and mathematical modelling founded on sound physical principles. His approach is multidisciplinary and his results range from the specific to the general. He has carried our fieldwork widely across Europe, the Arctic and North America, and has also worked in West Africa and the Antarctic. Boulton's high international standing is a clear measure of the importance placed on his work. He is one of very few workers having the background and insights necessary for the successful engineering of a synthesis of North American and European Late Plestocene [sic] glacial environments, landscapes and sedimentary facies.
