TitleGoodfellow, Peter Neville: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1986
DescriptionCitation typed. Supplementary certificate attached
CitationFollowing early pioneering studies with W.F. Bodmer, on the somatic cell genetics and biochemistry of HLA antigens and their expression, Peter Goodfellow was one of the first to develop monoclonal antibodies for studies of mammalian development and gene expression in pluripotent teratocarcinoma and hybrid cell lines. He has made major contributions to mapping human genes, including those for many oncogenes and key surface receptors.
His laboratory has pioneered the use of cell sorting for studying the somatic cell genetics of surface antigens. He has combined this in a most imaginative way, with molecular techniques, to isolate human-mouse hybrids containing small defined fragments of human chromosomes. These approaches underlie his outstanding analysis of the first identified functional gene on both the X and Y chromosomes. As a result, he is now well on the way to cloning the male determining genes on the human Y chromosome.
Peter Goodfellow has now provided the most detailed molecular and genetic analysis of the relationship between regions common to the human X and Y chromosomes and their boundaries. Most importantly, he has used elegant genetic and molecular techniques to identify the candidate gene on the Y chromosome for human sex determination and to show that previous candidates were not correctly identified. These studies place Peter Goodfellow at the forefront of human cell and molecular genetics.
