CitationDistinguished for his important contributions to visual science, especially by his ingenious experiments on visual illusions in the context of space perception and his inventions in the field of optics. He is also distinguished as a writer of highly influential scientific books, widely appreciated by both general and professional readers. Among these are Eye and Brain, The Intelligent Eye, Mind in Science, all of which combine breadth of outlook with high standards of critical insight. The Oxford Companion to the Mind, which he edited, has a remarkably wide coverage and acknowledged authority. He has delivered popular Royal Institution lectures and made frequent radio and television broadcasts on scientific subjects for a general audience and for children. He founded The Exploratory in Bristol, a hands-on science centre, which is making a remarkable and original contribution to stimulating an interest about science among the general p[public, especially among children. It has also had an important influence on the nature of science exhibitions elsewhere.
