TitleSchofield, Andrew Noel: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1985
DescriptionCitation on principal certificate typed. Supplementary citation handwritten. Supplementary certificate attached
CitationStarting in 1956, Schofield cooperated with K H Roscoe and C P Wroth on work which led to the initiation and development of the critical state theory of soil mechanics, with the greatest contribution ultimately attributable to Schofield. The theory postulates a critical state for granular and clay soils towards which such soils, under deformation, progress through a series of intermediate states. The theory has been developed to be compatible with and to embrace more traditional concepts, thereby providing a more unified framework for the discussion and interpretation of soil properties, including the interpretation and practical application of standard soil tests. Schofield also initiated in the UK the application over the past twenty years of geotechnical centrifuge model testing and has thereby himself pioneered important achievements both for the understanding of fundamental concepts in soil mechanics and in the solution of practical problems.
In particular, he has elucidated the mechanics of "liquefaction" of soil induced by earthquakes; has become an authority on the bearing capacity of surface foundations of offshore jack-up platforms on sandy sea beds; and he has made important contributions to our present understanding of the size of craters formed by near-surface large-yield nuclear explosives.
