CitationDistinguished for his pioneering work on the theoretical physics of quantum optics. He has made seminal contributions to the foundations of the quantum theory of light, with particular emphasis on the identification of phenomena that distinguish quantum from classical behaviour. He has made detailed calculations to evaluate the various experimental techniques for observing quantum optical phenomena in the laboratory. His proposals for the use of resonance fluorescence in the detection of photon antibunching and his detailed theory of four-wave mixing as a technique for generating squeezed light stimulated the first experimental observations of these phenomena. He has made valuable contributions to various aspects of the physics of optical bistability, to the application of Bell's inequalities in optics, and to the understanding of measurment [sic] in quantum mechanics. His 160 publications have firmly established his position as an international leader in his research field.
