TitleAstbury, Alan: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1988
DescriptionCitation typed. Supplementary certificate attached
CitationProfessor Astbury is a distinguished high energy physicist who combines experimental skills of a high order with a deep understanding of his subject and the ability to manage large projects. All these qualities were essential in his capacity as co-spokesman (with Professor Carlo Rubbia) in the recent experiment at CERN which led to the discovery of the W and Z bosons. This is a discovery of historical importance and Astbury's role was a crucial one. The initial discovery has been followed by observations of the W in all leptonic channels and the checking of electron-muon-tau universality. This experiment has confirmed conclusively the predictions of the link between the electromagnetic and weak interactions put forward by Glashow, Salam and Weinberg. The main thrust of Astbury's research has been connected with the weak interaction. Examples are, the first observation of parity violation in muon capture, and a detailed study of CP violation. In addition, he has made important contributions in the field of strong interaction spectroscopy with his work on the low mass proton-antiproton system and the kaon-nucleon system.
For seventeen months from October 1988 until February 1990 Astbury directed the Project Definition Study for the TRIUMF KAON Factory. This is a very large project which has now been submitted to the Canadian Government and to the Province of British Columbia for consideration and approval.
With this task completed Astbury has returned to participating in a research programme with the OPAL team at CERN.
In June 1989 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
