Citation | Geoffrey Dearnaley is distinguished for his seminal contributions to the fields of low energy nuclear physics, semiconductor detectors for nuclear radiations, ion channelling at MeV energies, and especially for his pioneering research into the ion implantation of semiconductor materials, the ion implantation of metals and ion-assisted coatings. He has published over 250 refereed papers and 53 patents, and his two books have become standard texts in the fields of semiconductor counters and ion implantation. His fundamental research contributions have been taken up by a range of industrial sectors such as electronics, engineering, automotive as a result of his own personal ability to translate complex scientific concepts into industrially-exploitable technologies. His innovations were seminal in the designs of several implanters, including the Lintott implanter, still the major force in semiconductor implantation after many years, and the second-generation "Blue Tank" facility. It was his idea to improve the wear and oxidation resistance of metals by ion implantation, leading to successes as varied as improved resistance to high-temperature corrosion of nuclear fuel cladding and notable reductions in wear of replacement hip-joints. He is a fundamental physicist who has made significant original contributions to a number of scientific fields, and whose understanding of both science and technology has successfully demonstrated to industry how to exploit them. |
