Description | Citation typed |
Citation | He is internationally renowned for his penetrating research on the nonlinear partial differential equations of hydrodynamics, and on related questions of applied analysis, his work being noted for its creative blend of classical and modern techniques. In fluid dynamics his achievements include a rigorous justification of the flow separation picture of Prandtl in the case of plane flow in channels with walls of small curvature, fundamental existence and uniqueness theorems for steady vortex rings, and the resolution with C J Amick and J F Toland of the Stokes conjecture on the form of the wave of greatest height. Influential work in applied analysis includes his treatment of the effect of regularity of the boundary on embedding theorems for Sobolev spaces. |
