TitlePatterson, Colin: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1990
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationPalaeozoologist and systematist. Distinguished for work on the morphology, palaeontology and systematics of fishes, and on methods and principles in systematics. In fishes his most important studies include pioneering work on the early evolution of acanthopterygians, on the structure and evolution of the braincase and caudal skeleton in actinopterygians, and on the phylogeny of major groups within actinopterygians and in chondrichthyans and sarcopterygians. He is also internationally recognised for his outstanding contributions to the theory and practice of systematics, especially those which have led to major advances in the development of cladistics. He has successfully applied this theoretical and philosophical background to previously unresolved problems in classifying fossils, in biogeography, and in testing periodicity of extinctions. Recently he has done notable work in bringing together principles of classical and molecular comparative biology, particularly on the concept of homology in the two fields.
