Citation | Professor Ellis is distinguished for his work in observational cosmology, with particular regard to studies of the evolutionary properties of normal galaxies; such studies are crucial in providing the datum with which observations of rarer and more exotic galaxies and quasars are compared. Professor Ellis has also played a big part in devising and organising the application of modern technology to astronomical instrumentation. His contributions to the planning of new facilities for UK astronomers, most notably the forthcoming collaborative GEMINI project (2, 8 metre telescopes), have been considerable. |
