TitleGale, Michael Denis: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1994
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationMichael Gale is distinguished for his contributions to the understanding of the genetics of cereals and other grasses. He is a leader of an international group of collaborators who have compared synteny over several genomes including those of rye, barley, wheat, maize and rice. The work shows that gene collinearity had been maintained over the many millions of years that these species have been isolated. As a consequence the locations of genes can be predicted between species and genetic, biochemical and physiological knowledge transferred from one species to another. This implies that rice, with a very small genome, can be analysed as a precise model for wheat, with a much larger genome. Earlier he had developed an RFLP map for wheat which is now being used by commercial plant breeders and he had analysed the genetics and physiology of height in wheat in relation to giberellin metabolism.
