Citation | Distinguished for his studies of the p53 tumour suppressor gene and T antigen of Simian Virus 40 (SV40). He co-discovered and characterized p53, a cellular protein which he and others have shown is mutated or over-expressed in most cancers of the lung, breast and colon. These studies exploited his panel of monoclonal antibodies which can distinguish mutant from wild-type p53 protein. He has developed a comprehensive immunochemical map of SV40 large T antigen, identifying its functional domains. In addition he defined a novel group of conserved RNA helicases. His work is characterized by elegant exploitation of monoclonal antibody methods, on which he is an acknowledged authority. |
