TitleChambers, Richard Dickinson: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1991
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his extensive and original work on organofluorine compounds in a new area of organic chemistry, based on the remarkable effect of fluorine on organic molecules. For his work he received the ACS Award for Creative Work in Fluorine Chemistry (1991). This work is increasingly important in medical, biological and industrial chemistry. In particular the remarkable rearrangements of F-alkyl-pyridazines to F-pyrazines, and F-alkypyridines to azaprismanes involving valence isomers have been established. Pentafluorophenyl organometallics and novel carbanions were prepared and their role in the fascinating negative Friedel-Crafts reaction, leading to crowded aromatics, was studied. Stable highly fluorinated carbocations and dications have been prepared and unusual aromatic substitutions observed.
