TitleSachs, Leo: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1996
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his studies on the molecular basis of normal and abnormal control of development of blood cells. His pioneering work on cell culture for cloning and clonal differentiation of normal haematopoietic cells led to the discovery of colony stimulating factors that control the development of specific blood cell lineages. He demonstrated that growth and differentiation are coupled in normal blood cell development and that the haemotopoietic factors, along with other agents, can suppress malignancy in leukaemic cells by inducing differentiation. Among his other major contributions are: The use of human amniotic fluid cells for pre-natal diagnosis; The reversion of certain sarcomas to a non-malignant state by segragation of specific chromosomes, and the identification of genes for the expression and suppression of malignancy. He has also been among the first to develop cell culture systems for malignant cell transformation by environmental carcinogens. His discoveries have provided new and important approaches and insights into how growth and differentiation are controlled in mormal and cancer cells and how abnormal changes can be clinically corrected.
