TitleWeiss, Robin Anthony: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1994
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his pioneering work on endogenous retroviruses and other viruses at a crucial stage in the understanding of their intimate realtionship with the host genome. His work on the inheritance of the virus genome and its induction paved the way for much of the later work on oncogenes.

More recently his group has made major contributions to the understanding of human immunodeficiency virus in relation to AIDS. These include the identification of CD4 as the major cell surface receptor for the virus, the first demonstration of neutralising antibodies against HIV and the establishment of syncytium assays for HIV and HTLV-1. His studies have contributed broadly to the epidemiology, cell biology, immune responses and pathogenesis of AIDS.
