TitleWhite, Simon David Manton: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1992
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on dark matter in the Universe and on the formation and evolution of galaxies. He was the first to show that when two galaxies collide and merge, the final product is similar to an elliptical galaxy. With Rees he was also the first to consider galaxy formation as caused by the sinking of the gas to the centre of a dark halo. His computer simulations with others of the Cold Dark Matter Universe have led to the 'standard model' of the growth of structure in the Universe to which both observations and other theories are always compared.
