Date | 1995 |
Description | Certificate of Candidate for Election to Foreign Membership. Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his many fundamental contributions to Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics, especially in relation to non-linear phenomena. He is recognised widely for his pioneering work on Plasma Physics, on Solitons and Nonlinear Waves, on Hamiltonian Dynamics, on Asymptotics and on the invention of special (Kruskal) coordinates for the description of Black Holes in Relativity Theory. In particular he discovered with his co-workers the technique of Inverse Scattering for the solution of "Integrable" Partial Differential Systems, and has made influential studies of the phenomenon of "Asymptotics beyond all orders".
He is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences and was a recipient from President Clinton of the US National Medal of Science. |
