Title | Barker, David James Purlove: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1994 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Professor David Barker is distinguished for epidemiological research which has challenged current theories of the pathogenesis of diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease and stroke. His unique studies, based on archived birth records of men and women now aged 50 years and over, have shown that these diseases are strongly linked to low birthweight and disproportionate body size at birth. This has led to the conclusion that the diseases are "programmed" by disturbances of nutrient and oxygen supply in utero. These remarkable findings have been replicated; and the need to understand the underlying mechanisms has given rise to a new area of research. |
