TitleMcWhirter, John Graham: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1995
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationFor his contributions to applied mathematics, electronic engineering and computer science, in particular, to digital signal processing. He is internationally renowned for his research on adaptive filtering and beamforming, parallel processing and systolic-array design. As a result of the so-called "McWhirter algorithm" the UK enjoys a prominent innovative position in this field. He has initiated at least three main areas of systolic-array development, bit-level arrays, arrays operating at word level and parallel-processing structures for recursive filtering. He has also been pivotal in instigating the manufacture of systolic arrays by the British electronic industry. Under his sponsorship GEC/MEDL has built and marketed systolic correlators and convolvers and STL has built and demonstrated the first "wavefront array" for adaptive null steering.
He has taken a leading role in promoting the subject of mathematics in signal processing and is a prominent member of both communities.
