Citation | Dr Peter Williams started out on an academic career in surface physics and electron microscopy, following his studies for a Ph.D. degree in the Cavendish Laboratory. After six years in academic research (post Ph.D.) he moved to industry. In the field of research, his work covered low temperature diffraction studies of transition metals dichalcogenides and intercalated graphite using electron and X-ray techniques, and later, applications of X-ray and angle resolved photoemission from solid surfaces. In industry he started as a director of research but soon moved into general management where, through his wide understanding of science and his abilities in business and administration, he has achieved outstanding success in promoting science based industry. He is a champion of the importance of expanding the science base, of building bridges between industry and universities and increasing the understanding of science in the government, the City and the public in general. |
