Title | Fasham, Michael John Robert: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation handwritten |
Citation | Dr Fasham is distinguished for three advances in biological oceanography. Biological processes were examined within the physical system so that dynamics of plankton patches could be described. He established field programmes to study the spring bloom in the Celtic Sea and showed how the physical and biological processes interacted. This field work laid the basis for the development of a model of carbon and nitrogen fluxes among components of the plankton, driven by changes in irradiance and vertical mixing. As a result of successful tests of the model measuring ocean colour with satellites, his approach now provides the basis for global studies |
