Title | Hall, Peter Gavin: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Professor Hall has made outstanding and wide ranging research contributions to statistics and probability which have impacted on many different scientific areas. Of particular significance are his research on sequential analysis leading to fundamental improvement of sampling methods; his studies of rates of convergence for sums of independent random variables; his research on geometric probability, in particular percolation; and his research on extreme values and order statistics. In addition he has made contributions to nonparametric curve estimations, bootstrap and related methods, and fractal methods, with industrial applications. His mathematical developments to the theory of the now widely-used bootstrap, particularly concerning how bootstrap should be used to construct confidence sets, represents a major breakthrough in statistics |
