TitleBarenblatt, Grigory Isaakovich: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Candidate for Election to Foreign Membership. Citation typed
CitationProfessor Barenblatt is uniquely distinguished, and widely recognised in the USA and Europe, for his fundamental achievements across an unusually broad range of topics in fluid and solid mechanics. He has worked on fluid flow in porous media, including elasto-plasticity of turbulent shear flows in homogeneous and stratified fluids; on flame propagation, structure and stability, and other aspects of combustion and explosion theory. Much of his work - although driven by the deepest physical insight - is characterised by the development and use of asymptotic methods, and in particular intermediate asymptotic analysis and scaling, nonlinear eigenvalue problems for scaling exponents and propagation characteristics, and their relation to renormalisation group methods
