TitleGray, Harry Barkus: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Candidate for Election to Foreign Membership. Supplementary certificate attached. Citation on principal certificate typed on separate piece of paper and pasted onto certificate. Citation on supplementary certificate typed
CitationProfessor Gray, who was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1971, has made seminal contributions to virtually every area of modern inorganic chemistry. In his early work, he developed semiempirical molecular orbital methods for the analysis of the electronic structures of the ground and excited states of transition metal complexes. This work, in combination with highly original experiments, has had a profound impact on the understanding of the electronic structures and spectra of metal carbonyls, nitrosyls, cyanides, oxo species, and metallocenes. He has also made extensive and intensive investigations of the applicability of the theories of electron transfer to metalloproteins. Professor Gray has received much national and international recognition for his work on inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry, spectroscopy and photochemistry
