TitleHahn, Erwin Louis: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Candidate for Election to Foreign Membership. Citation typed
CitationProfessor Hahn is distinguished for his discovery of spin echoes in nuclear magnetic and quadrupole resonance (NMR, NQR) and for introducing the technique and basic concepts of pulsed coherent transient magnetic resonance, the basis for a wide range of applications in analytical chemistry, magnetic resonance imaging in medicine, and its analogues in microwave and laser resonance. He predicted theoretically and detected optical self-induced transparency using high intensity laser pulses. He used spin echoes and pulse sequences for direct measurements of nuclear relaxation times, spin temperatures down to the microkelvin range, self-diffusion in liquids, local field fluctations in solids, and to discover and analyse the scalar nuclear spin-spin hyperfine interaction in molecules. He analysed transient electron-nuclear spin coupling in crystals, and invented a double resonance method to induce cross-coupling between dissimilar spins for detection and polarisation enhancement of rare spin species in high resolution NMR spectroscopy

    Collection highlights

Browse the records of some of our collections, which cover all branches of science and date from the 12th century onwards. These include the published works of Fellows of the Royal Society, personal papers of eminent scientists, letters and manuscripts sent to the Society or presented at meetings, and administrative records documenting the Society's activities since our foundation in 1660.
