TitleMcCanny, John Vincent: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed on a separate sheet and pasted onto certificate.
CitationDistinguished for his research on the design of very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuits and systems for digital signal processing. His pioneering work on systolic architectures for pipelined processing formed the basis for a number of commercial processor designs. His subsequent research on advanced computer arithmetic led to the development of very efficient recursive filters in which calculations are performed most significant digit first. He has recently pioneered the concept of reusable silicon cores for application-specific integrated circuits. In 1994, he founded the successful company Integrated Silicon Solutions to exploit his research. Earlier, he founded Audio Processing Technologies to exploit his research on signal compression algorithms that has subsequently been the basis of digital theatre sound. He helped create and now directs the Institute of Advanced Microelectronics in Ireland.
