She played a crucial role in encouraging scientific careers for women, in establishing the Sanger Centre and Wellcome Genome Campus at Hinxton, and in negotiations leading to the Joint Infrastructure Fund for Universities. She has also been prominent in raising the public understanding and appreciation of science.
