CitationElizabeth Robertson is recognized as a pioneer in embryonic stem cell biology. Her early experiments showing that genetically altered embryonic stem cells could contribute to the germ line in chimeric mice led to the 'knock-out mouse' revolution in mammalian genetics. She went on to discover a key molecule, nodal, that plays a critical role in establishing the early body plan in vertebrate embryos, opening up a whole new area of developmental research. These findings, along with a broad body of work on signalling pathways in early development, have secured Dr Robertson's reputation as one of the world's pre-eminent developmental geneticists.
