Description | Word processed form. |
Citation | Kafatos is a distinguished developmental and molecular biologist, and an institution builder. He was the youngest Professor ever appointed at Harvard, where he developed cDNA cloning technology, that has been absolutely critical to modern biology. He used it in a series of seminal studies of globin gene expression and later in pioneering analyses of the molecular evolution of gene families in insects including the first demonstration of conservation of gene regulatory sequences between distant animals (silkmoth and fruitfly). Kafatos was the intellectual leader of the Drosophila genome project and in the last decade has led the field of malarial research to change beyond recognition, culminating with his co-ordination of the Anopheles genome sequencing project. Kafatos was a founder of the University of Crete and of the successful Institute for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. He is currently Director-General of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. He is a member of the US National Academy and of the Academie Francaise. |
