Citation | Don Knuth is the originator and still the leading exponent of the Analysis of Algorithms, a mathematical study of their variations and their performance, both statistical and worst-case. The achievement is embodied in the three volumes of his Art of Computer Programming, a work of vast mathematical and historical scholarship. It has been translated into seven languages and has a readership in millions. His original contributions to programming technology include attribute grammars, the LR(k) and LL(k) parsing algorithms, and literate programming. His original contributions to mathematics include the Knuth-Bendix algorithm for word problems, and the Schensted-Knuth correspondence between matrices and tableaux. As a software engineer, he designed, programmed and distributed TEX and METAFONT, the first publication-quality typographic software tools, and published widely on the subject. This software now produces most of the world's scientific literature in physics and mathematics. |
