CitationGordon Conway has carried out important basic research on agricultural pests and their management, in agroforestry and in integrated pest management for the reduction of pesticide use. He is well-known for his work on the application of mathematical models to pest control. Throughout his career as an ecologist, he has been a strong proponent of a multidisciplinary approach to solving the problems of agroforestry and sustainable management. He has distinguished himself in the application of this work to the problems of the developing world and had held a series of influential posts from which he has been a major champion of sustainable agriculture. He has held a senior position in the Ford Foundation and now, as President of the Rockefeller Foundation, he has notably increased their emphasis on the problems of poverty in Africa. Dr Conway is a world leader in the application of contemporary science to the practical problems of the developing world.
