CitationDistinguished for wide-ranging research in high-energy astrophysics and astrophysical cosmology, including the first convincing demonstration of the channelling of energy in radio galaxies; the detection of X-rays from Cygnus A; the cosmological evolution of radio sources; the detailed prediction of a cosmologically important population of submillimetre sources, recently confirmed. As Director of ROE he gave outstanding leadership concerning the first infra-red detectors for UKIRT and JCMT (SCUBA) and played a key role in the initiation of Gemini. An inspired and frequent popular lecturer, dedicated to the public understanding of science, he has also authored several widely-used graduate texts.
