TitleMartin, Alan Douglas: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationAlan Martin is distinguished for his research in the theory of Elementary Particles, which includes studies of mesic atoms, kaon physics and hadron spectroscopy. His work on W boson and top quark was valuable in the pioneering collider experiments. Current ongoing projects include the determination, with Roberts and Stirling, of the parton distributions of the proton which are used worldwide; and the innovative studies with Kwiecinski, and with Ryskin, in small x physics which are being exploited by the experiments at HERA. He is a well known author of textbooks on Particle Physics. Indeed `Quarke and Leptons' by Halzen and Martin is now a standard text around the world. Alan Martin was the main driving force behind the formation of the Centre for Particle Theory in Durham; and also of the merger of the Physics and Applied Physics Departments which was accomplished during his successful 4 year period as Head of Department.
