TitleGadsby, David Christopher: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDavid Gadsby is distinguished for his work on the mechanisms of ion transporters and pumps. He has significantly clarified the biophysical relationship between ion pumps and ion channels and is known for his pioneering demonstration that Na,K-ATPase, the sodium-potassium exchange pump found universally in cells, exhibits a charge displacement. He has made significant contributions to the study of CFTR chloride ion channels, members of the superfamily of ABC transporters whose inherited dysfunction causes the disease cystic fibrosis. His research has defined the cycles of ATP binding and hydrolysis which control gating of this channel.
